Outfit Of The Day

The cyclone is hitting stronger than ever, and parts of Queensland & Northern New South Wales are flooding. Since the rain won't let up, I spent much of today hunkered down at home, trying to avoid the storm. I did however decide that wearing pajamas for two days straight was probably not a good idea, so I put on this outfit. Even though its pouring buckets, it's still pretty hot, so this skirt + t-shirt combo worked well for me while I got chores done around the house.

I also managed to make some pretzels from scratch, which turned out to be pretty awesome! Check em out on my instagram, and if you want you can follow me @praxsmiles. The  news tells me it'll be raining for the rest of the week, and I hope you join me in praying for all the folks affected by the floods.

a cozy Sunday

Even though it's the middle of summer, today felt like quite the opposite. Rainy, cold & gloomy were the order of the day as there's a storm making it's way down from Queensland. After yesterday's festivities, there was nothing we wanted to do more than stay at home with the candles lit and good cup of hot cocoa in our hands.

Happy Australia Day!

My very Aussie brekkie (i freaken love vegemite)

It's my fourth Australia Day in this country, and I think I'm finally feeling accustomed to it. The last 3 I felt more like a visitor getting to partake in the day's festivities -- or not. The first year I don't think I did anything, but feel bitter. Alas that's a story for another day.

Today however, I'm amongst it! I had vegemite for breakfast, I've got triple j's Hottest 100 on, and I'm off to a BBQ with some mates this arvo! Did you understand that? Sometimes I feel like Australians speak a whole different language than English.

Anyways, whatever you guys are up to today, I hope it's full of only good things.

Healthy Habits

image via

This post over on Camille Styles inspired me to think about my own healthy habits and try to add some more to my list.

Here are some things I think I'm doing a pretty good job of so far...

1. Eating In. I think we do a really good job of meal planning and making sure we eat in at least 5 times a week.  This is not only much healthier than eating out, but since we've been tight on money lately, cooking every night has helped us save much more.

2. Being Creative. I've been trying my hardest to make sure I never get bored.  Usually if I find myself feeling idle, I try and do something creative around the house. These tend to include finding inspiration for new projects, redecorating spots around the house or crafting something new.

3. Taking Care of Myself. These are really simple things I like doing that make me feel good. Sometimes I'll do a hot oil treatment on my hair, or give myself a pretty manicure or even take the time to relax in the bath. It's little things like this that make me feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the world.

Now for some things that need working on...

1. Eat Less Meat.  I'm carnivorous at heart. I was brought up this way. If the meal doesn't include some sort of meat in it, it doesn't feel like a complete meal to me. I'm starting to realize though, that meat is not necessary all of the time. I'm sure I can have a few vegetarian meals a week, and with trying to lose weight being one of my priorities, this can only help me out.

2. Worry Less. I'm sure you've noticed in my last few posts that I'm starting to sound like a worry wart. I hate it. Especially since I'm a believer in most if not everything happens for a reason. Whenever I go through something tough, I repeat that phrase over and over again. So if that's my mantra, I need not worry about every little thing. I have to trust that I can and will get through the tough times and come out on the other side even stronger.

3. Be Less Materialistic. I have too much stuff, and yet I still want more. I need to work on understanding that what I have already is enough. I do not need another dress, pair of shoes, or purse. I have what I need, and I need to be happy with that. (I know this habit is going to be tough to break!)

Well there you go, I've laid it all out on the table. Now don't leave me hangin! Are there any habits you're trying to break?

Currently

Spotted in Bohol, Philippines
Watching: I've just started both first seasons of Once Upon a Time & Girls. I've heard good things about both shows, but it's only now that I'm getting in to it.  I'm only one episode each into them, so we'll see!

Listening To: Everlasting Light, Ho Hey & This Fire.  I've been obsessed with these 3 songs lately. They're all really mellow and kinda nice to listen to especially since life's been crazy lately.  It's been nice to zone out and calm down, and try to remember that I don't need to get overwhelmed by everything.

Planning: my whole life, really. Is that dramatic? Haha I feel like I'm starting at a blank slate, and from here on in, I can do anything I want.  I've got certain things locked into place, like I finally know which school I'll be going to, but other important things like work and lifestyle are all still up in the air.  So to try and get something written on this slate, I've been job hunting like crazy, and trying to adjust and figure out what my new life will be like. I forgot that student life is all about struggle now, success later. And while I'm so excited to go back to school, I'm definitely more excited for what my future will be like once it's all ovvaaahhhh.

Thinking About: Losing weight.. Did I just do that?! I'm finally putting it out there. I know it may be late for resolutions, but I'm so ready to just get rid of this excess baggage. So I've been doing my best to eat healthy -- lots of apples and other fruit and salad and NO CHOCOLATE! I'm trying my best, really I am.

Making Me Happy: Alone time and getting back to myself. It's been ages since I've taken time to just be on my own and chill out, and I find then whenever I just focus on my needs, I end up being in a better mood and kinder to others.

So that's it! It's been a while since I've done one of these, and it's crazy to see the changes. Have a fab rest of your week!

In which I feel very lucky

Coron, Palawan in the Philippines

Life's really crazy right now. Since we've been back from the Philippines, it seems that everything has landed in my lap.  I'm faced with the ever present job hunt, only applying for roles that allow flexibility since I'll be a student again this February.  Bills seem to keep piling around me, and can you believe the internet router broke as well? Money's tight, but our head is still above water.

And to remind me that we're still swimming and not sinking is my guy.  Miguel through this has been such a support for me.  Multiple times I've wanted to just throw my hands in the air and give up, but he keeps telling me to push on and keep going. And for that extra strength, I feel lucky. We might've made some poor decisions together, but at least we're pushing toward what can only be good things ahead.

Sometimes life isn't easy, but at least I've got someone to share it with.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"There's nothing worse than a woman with a camel toe at a cocktail party because then your eyes look at that and you don't want to talk to her. You throw your hair back and you keep walking."

New Years in Bohol

sippin tea in my malong after the landing back in Manila

I've just landed back in Manila after spending New Years with the fam & Miguel in Bohol. There we saw Tarsiers, (little primates native to the island) rice farms, beautiful trees, a river and the chocolate hills.  We also stayed at a resort and swam at the beach most of the time.  It was a perfect low key new years.

1. Tarsiers are native to Bohol / 2. Miguel & I posing with the little guy. / 3. Forest Viewing / 4. Banka in the river. / 5. Miguel and the famous "Chocolate Hills" in the background. / 6. Rice Farm / 7. Carla and the river

While the island was beautiful, it is nice to be back in the metropolis, and I'm looking forward to spending our last few days here going out with our cousins.  It's crazy that we've only got 4 more days left before we depart for Australia again, but truthfully, I'm excited to go back.  There's a lot  I need to sort out in Sydney, and I have a funny suspicion 2013 will bring about lots of positive changes.
